Belonging

I belong to a family,
To a group of friends,
To a pilates class
To a TAFE course
To a school

Some of these groups are more important than others and for different reasons.
Friends and family are important for relationships.
TAFE and school are important for education.
And pilates is important for health.

People need to feel like they belong to something so that they feel loved, comfortable being who they are and special. Being part of something makes you feel like you're needed and wanted.

It was important for Carl to feel wanted and needed, especially in a family because Carl had never felt these emotions. Carl has been abandoned by his own mother and sister, he definately did not feel loved, he did not feel he belonged. Finding the Duncan's gave him a sense of love, need and want. The Duncan's needed Carl to make the extra money on the barge so that he could keep his job and to support his family. For the first time Carl feels as if he belongs somewhere. He belongs at the barge working for the Duncan's so that he support their family and his brother and himself.
